Quantitative risk assessment in food safety incl. PP

  • The understanding of importance of the risk analysis, and in particular the risk assessment
  • Knowledge of the principles and concepts of risk analysis according to international regulations
  • Understanding and use of risk assessment methodology
  • Resolve several case studies from different areas in VPH
  • Taken into account the weight of evidence and the uncertainty in risk assessment


After a short summary of the basics of risk analysis (relative importance, principles and concepts), qualitative and quantitative risk assessment methodologies will be presented with practical applications in chemical risks (furan in food, pesticides in beeswax and honey), in microbial risks (risk exposure assessment of Coxiella burnetii in milk and air, risk assessment of the introduction of Rift Valley Fever in a country by aircraft, economic impact of West Nile fever using scenario analysis) and antimicrobial resistance risk (cross-contamination due to the use of antimicrobial medicated feed).

Each day of workshop is divided in two sessions: the morning session starts at 9:00 until 13:00 (coffee break at 11:00) and the afternoon session starts at 14:00 until 18:00 (coffee break at 16:00).

Day 1 (27. September 2017): Importance, principles and concepts of risk analysis; and case study #1
-       Morning: Interactive basic course on risk analysis with emphasis on both qualitative and quantitative risk assessment; Uncertainty and weight of evidence; Risk question and risk pathway
-       Case study #1 (afternoon): Quantitative estimation of human exposure to Coxiella burnetii by consumption of unpasteurized milk and via inhalation of aerosols

Day 2 (28. September 2017): Case studies #2 and #3
-       Case study #2 (morning): Risk assessment of Belgian adults for furan contamination through the food chain
-       Case study #3 (afternoon): Public health risk scenario analysis of the presence of plant protection product and veterinary drug residues in beeswax

Day 3 (29. September 2017): Case studies #3 and #4
-       Case study #3 (morning) : Estimating the economic impact of a possible equine and human epidemic of West Nile virus infection in Belgium using scenario analysis
-       Case study #4 (afternoon): Quantitative release assessment of the risks associated with Rift Valley Fever-infected mosquitoes arriving into Great Britain aboard commercial aircraft

Day 4 (30. September 2017): Case study #5, exchange, conclusions, visits
-       Case study #5 (morning): The risk of cross-contamination due to the use of antimicrobial medicated feed throughout the trail of feed from the feed mill to the farm
-       Afternoon: Exchange on future challenges in risk assessment + Conclusions
-       Afternoon: Visit of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Liege and the city of Liège
