1HEALTH is a new network organization, led by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and cooperated by four other faculties at the University of Helsinki, to co-ordinate research actions within the area of One Health. One Health is a globally emerging concept recognizing that the health of humans and animals is interconnected and that their populations share the essentials of life: the genome, disease agents, health, welfare, and the environment. One Health involves different disciplines and professions to work together to resolve emerging health problems concerning animal and human populations worldwide. In addition to other profiling actions, 1HEALTH will host several tenure track professorships with their established research environment in years 2018-2022. The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for the position of an

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR / PROFESSOR IN RISK ASSESSMENT IN FOOD SAFETY

The increasing complexity of foodstuffs and food production systems, mobility of humans, animals and food, and growing numbers of food frauds are jeopardizing food safety and control systems worldwide. This together with evolving epidemiology, resistance, and virulence of pathogens, and increasing number of vulnerable individuals possess new types of health hazards in food systems. High-quality research is needed to identify and characterize novel hazards, assess exposure, characterize risks, and develop methods for early recognition of risks, and risk assessment.

The position is a joint position between the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and the Finnish Food Safety Authority Evira (1.1.2019 onwards Finnish Food Authority), with a shared work time allocation for both affiliations (50% / 50%). The research, expertise and teaching field of the professorship is food safety/risk assessment in food safety. The professorship is based in the One Health Research Programme hosted by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. Tasks in Faculty of Veterinary Medicine include academic research that supports scientific risk assessment in food safety, teaching and supervision related to scientific risk assessment in the veterinary curriculum, and societal interaction. Tasks in Evira include conduct of scientific risk assessments related to food safety and development of risk assessment methods as well as related scientific research and communication.

The successful applicant may be appointed to a permanent full professorship or a fixed-term assistant/ associate professorship (tenure track), depending on his or her qualifications and career stage.
