The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for the position of an

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR / PROFESSOR IN ZOONOTIC ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) develops and spreads rapidly, and is recognized as a major global emergency. The main driver for the development of AMR is the use of antimicrobials in humans and animals. The epidemiology and ecology of microbes resistant to antimicrobials is complex and greatly enhanced by global movement of humans, animals and food. Food and animals serve as major vehicles of AMR worldwide, and resistant zoonotic foodborne pathogens jeopardize the safety of food worldwide. High-quality research is needed to understand the mechanisms, prevalence, and spreading routes of AMR in order to develop novel measures to control AMR in zoonotic microbes along the food chain.

The position is a joint position between the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and the Finnish Food Safety Authority Evira (1.1.2019 onwards Finnish Food Authority), with a shared work time allocation for both affiliations (50% / 50%). The research, expertise and teaching field of the professorship is food safety/zoonotic antimicrobial resistance. The professorship is based in the One Health Research Programme hosted by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. Tasks in Faculty of Veterinary Medicine include academic research on zoonotic AMR in the field of food safety, teaching and supervision related to zoonotic AMR in the field of food safety in the veterinary curriculum, and related societal interaction. Tasks in Evira include development of surveillance of zoonotic AMR and related scientific research and communication.

The successful applicant may be appointed to a permanent full professorship or a fixed-term assistant/ associate professorship (tenure track), depending on his or her qualifications and career stage.
