To be responsible for leading the design and delivery of Veterinary Public Health (VPH) teaching in the taught programmes of the School of Veterinary Medicine. To provide academic leadership for Veterinary Public Health and Food Safety including development of a research strategy. To contribute to the delivery of an excellent student experience by delivering, organising and reviewing teaching, assessment and administration processes associated with undergraduate and postgraduate programmes including continuing professional development and to undertake scholarship to enhance learning and teaching in the School of Veterinary Medicine. To actively engage in relationships with external stakeholders that advance knowledge exchange, public understanding and outreach.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. Make a substantial contribution to delivering a range of teaching, supervision and assessment activities, in the field of Veterinary Public Health and Food Safety across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes within the School/College.

2. Carry out course administration within required timescales ensuring effective communication of information, in particular assessment requirements and criteria and timely and constructive feedback on assessment.

3. Take a lead in the on-going development and design of VPH aspects of the curriculum in a manner that supports a research-led and scholarly approach to student learning and assessment.

4. Develop effective approaches to the use of learning technologies to support and enhance course delivery, course organisation, feedback and assessment. This may involve blended and/or online provision.

5. Ensure an inclusive and evidence-based approach to facilitating learning in a range of face to face and potentially online delivery formats such as tutorials, lectures, problem based learning, that promotes student participation and learning outcome attainment.

6. Develop effective working relationships with students and, in partnership with relevant student services teams, respond appropriately to the diverse range of learning approaches and learner needs.

7. Develop a growing portfolio of scholarship outputs and activities by undertaking methodologically rigorous, educationally relevant, enquiries into student learning and disseminate evidence to enhance your own, and potentially others’, teaching practices. Attend and participate in appropriate seminars and conferences to support research-led teaching and scholarship in your professional area.

8. Develop relationships with external stakeholders in support of knowledge exchange, public understanding and appropriate forms of outreach such as widening access.

9. Participate in local, and potentially overseas, activities associated with student recruitment (e.g. open days), orientation and induction and other School and University initiatives such as support for student transitions, employability and student mobility as appropriate.

10. Engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate.

11. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School.

For appointment at grade 9 applicants will need to demonstrate significant leadership experience across the duties above. 

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential:
A1. Veterinary Degree registrable with RCVS
A2. European Boards in Veterinary Public Health (or Equivalent)

For appointment at Grade 9:
A3. Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) or equivalent in related discipline with an extensive and established reputation in scholarship, and significant teaching experience within Veterinary Public Health.
A4. Knowledge and network contacts within the Public Health Sector for furthering commercial initiatives and collaborations.

Desirable:
B1. Official Veterinarian
B2. Professional teaching qualification (FHEA or equivalent)
B3. Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD or equivalent in related discipline) with a growing reputation for scholarship within the subject area.
B4. Knowledge and network contacts within the Public Health Sector for furthering commercial initiatives and collaborations.

B5. Professional teaching qualification (FHEA or equivalent)

Skills

Essential:
C1. Track record of scholarship and development and delivery of teaching, and proven ability to develop and devise teaching programmes, techniques and methods.
C2. Extensive breadth and depth of knowledge in Veterinary Public Health to develop teaching programmes/methodologies/learning support.
C3. Expertise across the field, corresponding to training and qualifications, and ability to provide expert advice to clinicians, external veterinary surgeons and professional organisations.
C4. Experience and achievement in Veterinary Public Health reflected in an expanding personal academic portfolio.
C5. Proven ability to design, review and enhance multiple learning, teaching and assessment programmes.
C6. Experience of developing and demonstrating teaching and research methods and devising models, approaches, techniques, critiques and methods.
C7. Ability to communicate complex or conceptual ideas to those with limited knowledge and understanding and developing early career academic colleagues.
C8. Continuing engagement with current practice and developing knowledge.
C9. Ability to contribute to broader leadership and management activities along with an awareness of current and future priorities of the University/College/School/Service.

Experience

Essential:
E1. Must have held a full valid UK driving licence for 2 years. All non-UK applicants from the EU/EEA or Designated Countries are required to register with the DVLA and apply for a Driving Licence Counterpart (known as a D9). E2. A track record of published research.

F1. Postgraduate experience as an OV, including working in food businesses.

Act as first point of contact for problems/enquiries from students in subject area.

To promote postgraduate teaching courses in Veterinary Public Health and Food Hygiene,
To act as coordinator of the delivery of bespoke learning and teaching courses for industry; Official Veterinarians and Meat Hygiene Inspectors.

Standard Terms & Conditions

The salary will be on the Research and Teaching Grade, level 8/9, £43,266 - £50,132/£51,630 - £58,089 per annum.

This position is open ended and full time.

The successful applicant will be eligible to join the Universities' Superannuation Scheme. Further information regarding the scheme is available from the Superannuation Officer, who is also prepared to advise on questions relating to the transfer of Superannuation benefits.

New entrants to the University will be required to serve a probationary period of 6 months.
